I have a "51 Farmall M that didnt want to start..... if you used starter fluid and a 12v battery you could get it started, sometimes.....I am in the process of changing her over to 12v.....for another reason.....

she has been sitting (inside)now for over a year with out running....

what procedure should I use to check compression....cyl. probably dry and rings wont seal....I want to determin if I should do a overhaul... this is a play tractor ,I have no place to work her..... .she is in excellent shape to look at....well cared for....thanks....Don

two more things when checking compression, open throttle, pull coil wire so you don't have a spark that ignites the vapors comeing from the open cylinders.

Remove all the plugs, use a compression gauge in the spark plug hole, and spin the starter. Do it first dry, them squirt motor oil in each cylinder and do it again. If the compression dry is low and increases significantly wet, you have a ring problem. If it is somewhat low and stays the about the same, the valves are leaking. More important than the actual numbers is the difference -- the cylinders should be within 10% of each other. If you have a gasoline engine with standard pistons, the original compression was about 120. How much less than that you can go and still have a decent engine, I don't know. IMO, 90-100 is good, 80 questionable. Others will have different opinions.

You might try putting about a 1/4 cup of tranny fluid in each cylinder and let it sit a couple days and then try starting it. The tranny fluid will loosen up the rings and boast the compression and may even fix the problem if its stuck rings.
