756 with C291 gas has a thin rear engine cover and long frame rails. With a diesel, any diesel, it has a thick rear cover and short frame rails. Hood's the same length, though. Unless you are extremely lucky, you won't find a good engine at a reasonable price. You'll never be happy with what it REALLY costs to do the conversion. We lucked out, found a D360 out of an old prison bus for a song, and had a local mechanic install it in the 756. The tractor has a "wide frame" rear engine plate from an 886 on it now (looks weird), and a front engine plate from the same 886, milled down to fit between the frame rails. It's about 2" longer now, so the hood doesn't quite fit anymore, but the plate Dad bent up to fill in the gap looks pretty good. Some day I'll get brave and go at it with the mig welder to permanently extend the hood. The mechanic also had to have a crossover pipe made up for the radiator because the water inlet on the D360 is on the wrong side. The fuel gauge doesn't work anymore because he had to use the hole for the sending unit for the return line from the injector pump. The tachometer doesn't work anymore because this engine has an inline injection pump, and the tach drive won't mesh up with the gears behind the front cover. Even though the conversion has already paid for itself, largely because of the engine price, Dad wouldn't do it again. Too much screwing around and frustration getting the parts and cobbling things up to work properly.
