I have a very tired 756 gas. I would like to make it a diesel. What fits from what equipment and how much work is involved?

756 with C291 gas has a thin rear engine cover and long frame rails. With a diesel, any diesel, it has a thick rear cover and short frame rails. Hood's the same length, though.

Unless you are extremely lucky, you won't find a good engine at a reasonable price. You'll never be happy with what it REALLY costs to do the conversion.

We lucked out, found a D360 out of an old prison bus for a song, and had a local mechanic install it in the 756. The tractor has a "wide frame" rear engine plate from an 886 on it now (looks weird), and a front engine plate from the same 886, milled down to fit between the frame rails. It's about 2" longer now, so the hood doesn't quite fit anymore, but the plate Dad bent up to fill in the gap looks pretty good. Some day I'll get brave and go at it with the mig welder to permanently extend the hood. The mechanic also had to have a crossover pipe made up for the radiator because the water inlet on the D360 is on the wrong side. The fuel gauge doesn't work anymore because he had to use the hole for the sending unit for the return line from the injector pump. The tachometer doesn't work anymore because this engine has an inline injection pump, and the tach drive won't mesh up with the gears behind the front cover.

Even though the conversion has already paid for itself, largely because of the engine price, Dad wouldn't do it again. Too much screwing around and frustration getting the parts and cobbling things up to work properly.

Sounds like you should rebuild your gas engine or get a diesel WITH the frame rails/linkage/whatever-else-you'll-need.

Or you could simply get another rig altogether. Finding a rebuild kit should be easy, though. You could rebuild the gasser, sell the rig, and get a diesel like you want.

The correct diesel for a 756 is the D-310. These last forever and were not used in many tractors, so you aren't just going to find one at the local salvage yard, and you certainly wouln't find a good one cheap. A D-310 from a 715 combine will be easier to find but will not easily work, as the tractor flywheel will not bolt up to it's crankshaft. It would also take a few mods to make a D-310 from a 756 fit your 756 gas, like throttle linkage, frame rails, ect. The big old 361/407 could be made to work with a few more mods and some 806 frame rails, but once again, it's hard to find one. The 414/436/466 will also bolt up to your clutch housing, but they are way wider than the older engines, and you would need to use 66 series frame rails and make spacer plates to go between the frame rails and your front bolster. The easiest diesel to put in would be the D-282, as it's block is almost identical to the C-291 block. D-282 was in most 706 diesels, so you could use 706 parts and make it look "almost" factory. There will still a few mods involved, like throttle linkage. However, the D-282 is built no heavier than your gas engine. If you really want to go all out, it is possible to repower an old IH with a 3.9 or 5.9 B series Cummins.

Heck if ya want to go thru all the work and fussen you could even put a 1710 cummins ini guess i got out of yea i can make this fit thing . Been there done that and i would rather fix what it came with , i remember what one guy and i went thru to try and put a 6BTA in and Oliver that according to the one guy that it was just a drop in and al ya had to do was this and that and everything came with the kit from bonehead engeneering well this was done at a dealer that i would go and do contract work for when he got a red one in that needed fixen and got conned into this nightmare along with his head mechanic and this guy was real good well after 10 days of doing this and that and hearing all the B/S from the dealer me and Kenny got it done as per insturctions and sent it back to the customer and three days later it came back in two pices as that littel old cummins broke the bathtub . Guess that 230 HP was just a wee bit much.

I think the 756 gas has the long frame and hood so you could go with a 361 or 407 or 414 with a little more mods.It can be done I'm putting a 466 in a 706 that has a real tired gas engine.

A bunch of work and a bunch of money as you are not just going to pull and engine out of something else and drop it is unless it came out of a late 706 or a 756 then you will need to find a new fuel tank so ya have a port for the return line , so you can freshen up the old 291 or ya can get a nother tractor .
