Jim: Before you take anything apart, place your shut off so it can't start and turn it on the starter. If engine turns over as easily as before the first place I'd look is under the valve cover. May not hurt to do that anyhow as the valve cover will have to come off at some point. I once bent a valve push rod on my 656D. You wouldn't believe how severe those can knock. As I recall it was far worse standing in front of tractor hearing through the rad. The young lad running tractor on the haybine when this happened, figured the engine was going to fly apart before he could shut it down. Push rod and a gasket are quite a cheap fix, compared to what you are thinking.
