Hi all, I'm looking for some input. I have a IH 444 with a diesel. This weekend I either through a rod or spun a bearing. She started knocking violently and I shut her down. The rod didn't come out the side, so I'm hoping it's a bearing. What I'd like to know is some ideas on where to get either parts, a used motor, short block, or any thoughts on rebuilding the motor. Any help would be appreciated.

Jim, after market parts are availlable for the BD154 engines, or original through the dealer network. Sure sounds like a shot rod bearing to me. ;)

Jim: Before you take anything apart, place your shut off so it can't start and turn it on the starter. If engine turns over as easily as before the first place I'd look is under the valve cover. May not hurt to do that anyhow as the valve cover will have to come off at some point.

I once bent a valve push rod on my 656D. You wouldn't believe how severe those can knock. As I recall it was far worse standing in front of tractor hearing through the rad. The young lad running tractor on the haybine when this happened, figured the engine was going to fly apart before he could shut it down. Push rod and a gasket are quite a cheap fix, compared to what you are thinking.

I would pull the pan for starters and take a look at the rod journal. Your local machine shop may be able to grind it undersize.

You probably need to pull the engine anyway and have the block cleaned of any metal particles.
Your Case/IH dealer may have some of the parts.
Sleeve kits should be available. Hal
