I'm not even close to the most qualified to answer this, but until someone else comes along, it appears that I am all you have. No, you don't have to take off the main deck. What you have to do is follow the gear shift down to the tube coming up from the deck. On the sides of that tube, there may or may not be welch plugs. If there is, remove them. If not, you will see approx. a 5/8" hole. In that hole is a pin. Push that pin out one side or the other. You may have to push down on the gearshifter a bit to relieve some pressure. Now the gearshifter should just lift straight out. In that hole, you will see the rails. 2nd gear is on the 2nd one from the left. If I remember correctly, you have to put the shift lever forward to get to 2nd gear - that would push the spoon of the shifter backwards. So your second rail is stuck rearward. Get a screwdriver and push it forward. You may have to rock the tires a bit while doing this. Now you can put it all back together in reverse order, however, I would take the spoon on the bottom of the shifter and build it up with weld and grind it down to the right size. That should keep it from happening again for a long time.
