My neighbor asked me to work on his "H". IT is locked up in 2nd gear and can`t get it out of gear. It will start. The clutch is working. Do I have to take the plate off and look down in there and see what is going on?

Thank you Jim

well this tractor sat outside for 20 years. Some school kids took it for a school project, cleaned it , painted, and got it running for my neighbor Took the shifter off,it was wore at the bottom. The pin holding the shifter was also wore out. Took the drain plug out, no oil!! About a half a cup of this tan looking tar stuff drained out in an hour. Who knows when the oil was checked or changed!! Looked down the shifter tube, what a mess. It is amazing this thing moved!!! Since this is such a mess, I think he wants to take the deck off and dump 5 to 10 gallon of kerosene in the case, soak awhile!! Thanks everyone for helping Jim

After you get the shifter lever out the shift rails will slide into place if the clutch is pushed in to relieve the pressure. Mite want a block in front and behind the front wheels so the tractor wont roll away when the rails are lined up as then trans will be free.

Drove my tractor 8 miles to a friends. Got there, tranny locked up, was gunna be a long walk home..... .....
Turns out the pin that holds the shifter in place had wore so bad it allowed the shiter to engage 2 gears at once. Pulled the pin, realigned the shifter rails, installed a bolt instead of the pin, drove it home.

I'm not even close to the most qualified to answer this, but until someone else comes along, it appears that I am all you have.

No, you don't have to take off the main deck. What you have to do is follow the gear shift down to the tube coming up from the deck. On the sides of that tube, there may or may not be welch plugs. If there is, remove them. If not, you will see approx. a 5/8" hole. In that hole is a pin. Push that pin out one side or the other. You may have to push down on the gearshifter a bit to relieve some pressure. Now the gearshifter should just lift straight out.

In that hole, you will see the rails. 2nd gear is on the 2nd one from the left. If I remember correctly, you have to put the shift lever forward to get to 2nd gear - that would push the spoon of the shifter backwards. So your second rail is stuck rearward. Get a screwdriver and push it forward. You may have to rock the tires a bit while doing this. Now you can put it all back together in reverse order, however, I would take the spoon on the bottom of the shifter and build it up with weld and grind it down to the right size. That should keep it from happening again for a long time.

Not qualified? Sounds like a very good answer to me.
