M 400 wheel bearings

I am posting this question for a friend.( his computer just died:)) He is wondering if you can change the old style ball bearing for the wheel bearing's that were in M's, 400's, etc,over to the newer tapered roller style that was in the later 560's? I don't know if its just this area or what, but he's bought a few of these older M's and a 400 at some auctions', and they all have a problem with a ball falling out of the wheel bearing and ruining some transmission gears, so when he gets ready to put them back together, he wanted to know if you could use the later model style bearing? thanks for all you help
