I am posting this question for a friend.( his computer just died:)) He is wondering if you can
change the old style ball bearing for the wheel bearing's that were in M's, 400's, etc, over to the newer tapered roller style that was in the later 560's?

I don't know if its just this area or what, but he's bought a few of these older M's and a 400 at some auctions', and they all have a problem with a ball falling out of the wheel bearing and ruining some transmission gears, so when he gets ready to put them back together, he wanted to know if you could use the later model style bearing?

thanks for all you help

The inside axle bearings were changed to roller
bearings with no taper, replacing the ball bearing.Roller bearing could be used in M and others.

FWIW, I took all the internals out of a late 560 and put them in a SMTA. I did that for the larger bearings and lower ratio first gear. I could have just the swapped the trans/axles but I wanted the casting numbers and dates of the SMTA to stay with the tractor. I can't remember if the axle bearings were tapered. I would guess not because I don't remember setting the new bearings for pre-load using shims.

Well, my friend says an old timer told him that the early 460/560's still used the old ball bearing style , but he claimed the newer 460/560's used the tapered bearing setup. I have no idea if this info is correct or not.

Do you know if the ball bearing style for the 560 was a more heavy duty, or some type of enclosed unit?

I guess he just wants to try to make sure he never has a problem with one of these balls dropping out again.

SOME of those bearings for a 560 are considerably heavier, and WILL swap into an M or SM. I have an M and SM that were given this treatment when the rear end was overhauled in the mid-1960s by our local IH dealership. They put in all new bearings, and used 560 bearings wherever possible.
