Ill give you a description on what to look for for indentifying them without the casting number. Look at the compression chamber, the old M heads along the side, are straight along the sides, the newer heads, have an indention along one side of the chamber, like a slanted wall, this was done so IH could use firecrater pistons in these engines. A real good cyl head to look for is a 8574 casting, these are from a Super M, and are identical tothe 400-450 heads, but still has the old 4 digit casting code, the new heads have like a 6 digit code, and always started with a 361??? or something along that line, Ih upgraded their engines as they got newer, and it all started with the Super M,, different internal casting on the block, bigger sleeves for a larger bore, a differnt crank, which was bigger on the rod and main journals, but still can interchange with the M blocks, the head and cam are a matched set, they gave the cams more lift and duration, as well as increase the compression in the chamber, See, the new style heads,, the valves are longer, so the head castings were shallower therefore increased compression by the chamber not being so deep in the head from the short valves. Also, this allowed more room in the ports of the head to be larger and more open thru the intake runners, since the top of the compression chamber was moved down towards the block,, the casting was more open, and made room for more area in the ports.
