460 throwout bearting/clutch stuck? How to tow?

Just bought a Farmall 460 with a IH 2000 loader on it. 1961 with TA, 12 gal pump and the tillage gear. Most everything is in good shape except the clutch (we knew this before we bought, $2k for the package realizing that we might put another $1k in.) When depressed it grinds the last inch. Had it stuck in 2 gears at one point, reset to neutral with a tire iron, replaced the shift lever with one that was 1/2 longer on the bottom and that worked fine. Problem: On the way to the mechanic today (5 mile trip) I stopped to shift from 3rd to 4th and when I put the clutch in, there was no grinding noise. I was able to shift into 4th but when I let the clutch out the tractor didn't move. I am able to get the tractor in neutral and do anything I want with the clutch all the way in (e.g. run the PTO, loader, etc.) But as soon as I let the clutch out the engine dies, like it's under load. The tractor doesn't move forward or backward when in neutral or in gear when the clutch is let out. With the tractor on and the clutch in and the gear in neutral it will free-wheel. When in gear the tractor won't move. I don't want to spend time working on it where it is, would rather get it to the shop asap (now 4 miles away) and work on it there. After 2 or 3 times trying to let the clutch out and little waft of smoke we seen out of the left side hole right in front of the clutch. My neighbor offered to tow me to the shop with his 5388 (mmm, nice.) Can I just leave the tractor off and in neutral and get it towed this way? Or is it safest to have the tractor on and the clutch depressed while being towed? Comments, thoughts, suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks! -Mike
