460 Is A Whiner

I'm planning on splitting the 460 this winter to fix the TA. Another problem (I think) that needs a look is why there is a fairly loud constant whining noise coming from the gear train area. The noise is present all the time whether the tractor is in neutral or it is in gear and moving. I accidently discovered that most of the noise subsides when the PTO lever is engaged or when the PTO lever is immediately moved from the OFF position. In fact, the noise is at its lowest when the PTO lever is between full OFF and full ON. The noise doesn't seem to be coming from the PTO planetary but from somewhere ahead of the PTO. I think some whine from this series of tractor is just their nature, but our 460 is pretty loud and annoying to beat the band. An acquaintance has a very nice A-1 condition 560, and it exhibits a little of this whine, but NOTHING near the level our 460 puts out. Once I've got her split, what should I be looking for? Maybe the bad TA (shot on the LOW side)is the culprit?
