460 Is A Whiner

I'm planning on splitting the 460 this winter to fix the TA. Another problem (I think) that needs a look is why there is a fairly loud constant whining noise coming from the gear train area. The noise is present all the time whether the tractor is in neutral or it is in gear and moving.

I accidently discovered that most of the noise subsides when the PTO lever is engaged or when the PTO lever is immediately moved from the OFF position. In fact, the noise is at its lowest when the PTO lever is between full OFF and full ON. The noise doesn't seem to be coming from the PTO planetary but from somewhere ahead of the PTO.

I think some whine from this series of tractor is just their nature, but our 460 is pretty loud and annoying to beat the band. An acquaintance has a very nice A-1 condition 560, and it exhibits a little of this whine, but NOTHING near the level our 460 puts out.

Once I've got her split, what should I be looking for? Maybe the bad TA (shot on the LOW side)is the culprit?

Had a 460 that we used HARD for 30 years. Had that whine for 30 yrs. Seemed to be in the PTO break; when engaged PTO it was quieter. An Int mechanic once told me that it was better to leave PTO engaged at all times. I didn't - kind of got used to the houl.

Mine does the same thing, I thought it was the hydraulics, as it subsides when the lever is moved. Just got this tractor, part of my procedure is to change the fluid, as it has water in it. I'll have to engage the pto to see if that helps, but mine doesn't sound like gear noise, more like hydraulic whine. The TA does work, I'm really not eager to split the thing in case something is wrong.

Joe I would say your noise is comimg from your front pto gears in t a housing.Your pto driven gear in ta housing is splined on lower shaft which is held on by bolt & washer. Check if bolt is loose or lost out.

Joe it very well could be coming from the PTO IF YOU HAVE THE 2 BAND PTO it did that from the first SMTA"s. The SMTA through the 450 had what was knowen as seasonal disconnect at back a TA housing so the pto did not run, most guys just put pto in gear when there was not implement with pto, just to stop noise.

Aces: Our 460 is, I guess, what you might define as an early model--1959 vintage. So, the PTO driveline design then is not that far removed from the SMTA/450 design?

My brother's 400 does not produce this noise. Could he have a "non-two band" drive? What is a "two-band drive" and how to they create the unwanted noise?

I will look at the I&T manual tonight. I don't recall seeing a seasonal disconnect feature mentioned, but I have not studied the PTO drive system in the manual either. Now you've got me curious.

I guess I don't have a problem keeping the PTO engaged all the time if that's the answer. With the PTO engaged, it sure does make running the 460 more pleasurable. I keep thinking though, that something just isn't right and needs attention.

Dad split the 460 some years ago for a TA fix (didn't last long) so I'm suspecting that something may not have gone together correctly.

Thanks!

The 400 has the same style PTO as an early 460. I haven't ever seen a seasonal disconnect on a 460. BTW our early 460 whines a little with the PTO disengaged and the brake applyed.

I've found that most whining in gears is caused by poor gear mesh. I don't know much about 460's but I've worked on Fords and AC's that whined, and by shimming the gears properly, until the mesh was as per manual, the noise was diminished tremendously. In antique motorccle work, with a pulled apart tranny, I've used small bits of clay to observe the meshing. That usually makes it obvious, and is easy to clean.

Take Care,
Steve
