Matt: They were not a mechanical gear lock like most smaller tractors. My understanding is, it is a wet clutch pack much like IPTO. I had a Deere about the same weight, less power, (about 100 hp)and the diff lock was very effective. Again it was the same type.

I always called my 1066 a costly learning experience. I needed the PTO horse power, at time of purchase I was not too concerned about drawbar hp. Problem comes when you try to put that much horse power on the drawbar it takes rubber and lot of it on our eastern soils. Dealer delivered the tractor on singles with tires loaded, then came a 25' cultivator and 20' disk with 20" blades. During tillage tractor would leave wheel tracks, enough it interfered with seeding. In the first 1,000 hours the 1066 ruined those rear tires. The tires had bulges large enough you could use high gear. IH dealer brought in Goodyear they replaced the tires, and I bought a second set and the dual rims. I did not put the chloride back in. Cured the tracks in the tilled fields, plus I had better traction with duals than I ever got from the singles with chloride, on tillage work, remember that. It will not hold true on hard roads or ground.

I then had a new problem on tillage work. Load one of those tractors with duals pulling, and it wants to go straight ahead. I started getting front end breakage, spindles, etc. My opinion tractors that size should be 4x4. So much easier on the brakes, if your not using them for turning. I have driven a few tractors since rear duals and 4x4 under heavy tillage loads. Definately the way to buy a 100 hp plus tractor.

I will add this though, if its tillage work you do go articulated.

Today's Featured Article - Choosin, Mounting and Using a Bush Hog Type Mower - by Francis Robinson. Looking around at my new neighbors, most of whom are city raised and have recently acquired their first mini-farms of five to fifteen acres and also from reading questions ask at various discussion sites on the web it is frighteningly apparent that a great many guys (and a few gals) are learning by trial and error and mostly error how to use a very dangerous piece of farm equipment. It is also very apparent that these folks are getting a lot of very poor and often very dangerous advice fro ... [Read Article]
