If so, a generator (which would have been origianl equipment) is a closed cylinder with a band arond one end and usually with 2 bolts sticking out the side for connections, while an laternator is usuall shorter and wider, and is somewhat open so you can see the windings (allows for better coling).

If you are refering to magneto or distributor, the magneto is fairly tall with a square box on top with a high voltage wire coming out the front of the box and going to the distributor cap on the end. A distributor is more round, with an externally mounted coil. The exception is if you have a magneto that has been modiifed to use a battery ignition coil, in which case it usually still has thebox on top, but a se[erat e coil. Now I totally confused you, right?
