Hey All,
Hopefully this is a simple question

I have a 1953 Stage I Super H.

for my next rpoject o nit I would like to replace the wiring harness.

How do I tell is I have a Magneto or a Generator?
and does it make a siference with the harness?

Nadz - Presuming your SH has a generator and distributor ignition (virtually all did from the factory) make sure you get a wiring harness for a Stage I Super H - a Stage II harness will not fit! (Stage I has the voltage regulator on a bracket over the starter – on a Stage II it mounts on the back of the ammeter box.)

However if your tractor has been converted to an alternator, buy a Stage II harness. You will wind up not using one of the two wires that connect to the generator, but the harness will be the correct length to make the alternator connection inside the ammeter box.

Do you by chance mean alternator or generator rather than magneto? If so, a generator (which would have been origianl equipment) is a closed cylinder with a band arond one end and usually with 2 bolts sticking out the side for connections, while an laternator is usuall shorter and wider, and is somewhat open so you can see the windings (allows for better coling).

If you are refering to magneto or distributor, the magneto is fairly tall with a square box on top with a high voltage wire coming out the front of the box and going to the distributor cap on the end. A distributor is more round, with an externally mounted coil. The exception is if you have a magneto that has been modiifed to use a battery ignition coil, in which case it usually still has thebox on top, but a se[erat e coil. Now I totally confused you, right?

Spelling ain"t the issue. You asked "magneto or generator" which makes no sense.

You can have either, neither, or BOTH, because they"re in two completely different places on the tractor and serve two completely differnet purposes.

The magneto makes the spark plugs spark. It"s on the side of the engine, out in the open. You can either have a magneto or a battery ignition.

The generator charges the battery. It"s up under the hood. I"d dare say that every Super H came with a generator. A few probably have been converted to 12V where the owner installed an alternator in place of the generator. This will be OBVIOUS if you look. If there"s a thing that looks like the alternator in your car up under the hood, you have an alternator.

This tractor most likly came with a distributor not a mag unless some one added it becuase they did no thave a battery or charging system that worked. The coil is contained in the mag and external on the dist. So on a distributor your wireing would come from your switch and go to the coil then from the coil to the Dist. On a mag the wire comes directly from the switch to a screw on the side of the mag . If this confuses you go to ebay and do a search for a H4 mag you will see the difference. JON
