The engine speed was probably tampered with in the governor or just got messed up some other way. Allan is right, just set the idle to way you think it sounds best in the governor, and get the fuel mixture right on the carb. Good luck. I'm trying to get my M running nice. You should hear it idle. Nasty little thing, but she'll pull alright. I need to rebuild the carb.
