Farmall M timing gears

Had to pull the magneto drive gear out of the M to get the play out of it (the key was worn and the nut was loose on the shaft). people have said that you can mark the magneto drive and pull it out and use trial and error to put it back in. i did this and i got it back in so it runs but i can tell its not right cause it runs rough and really really has trouble getting started (it would fire right up before). i am not sure which mark i made will be right because of all of the play that was in it before. is there a way to get the timing right without just taking it out and moving the gear one tooth at a time each way? is there a way to use a timing light with the mag on full advance or retard and determine how much and in what direction to turn the gear? thanks for the help jeff
