Had to pull the magneto drive gear out of the M to get the play out of it (the key was worn and the nut was loose on the shaft). people have said that you can mark the magneto drive and pull it out and use trial and error to put it back in. i did this and i got it back in so it runs but i can tell its not right cause it runs rough and really really has trouble getting started (it would fire right up before). i am not sure which mark i made will be right because of all of the play that was in it before. is there a way to get the timing right without just taking it out and moving the gear one tooth at a time each way? is there a way to use a timing light with the mag on full advance or retard and determine how much and in what direction to turn the gear? thanks for the help

With a magneto, it should be easy to time the spark because the impulse coupler "snaps" each time when it fires. Looking at the crank pulley, the single mark should be TDC and the double marks are for spark advance when running at higher engine speeds. Watching rotation when hand cranking, the double marks will show first (advance timing) and then the single mark will appear. Determine where TDC #1 is and then slowly turn the crank while listening for the "snap". I am guessing the timing is late if it starts hard. If the engine seems to fight the starter then timing is too early.
Adjust the mag so it 'snaps" at or just after TDC and your engine will be able to start & run just fine.

Did you time the mag to the engine, after you put it back in? If not, you can advance or retard it while the engine is running to get it smooth. You really don't need a timing light on an M. Static timing is done with #1 at TDC. The mag is installed with the coil next to the block, and the rotor pointing to #1 on the cap. Advance (pull away from block) until it trips. (don't trip the mag with it off when you adjust it to #1 on the cap).

I did all of that. the problem i have is the gear is not timed right to the cam gear. i need to know what to do to get that right without pulling the whole front cover off. when i just move the mag back and forth there is not a really noticble change in the sound, a small one maybe but even then it still starts hard. thanks
