Kevin - There should be no discernable play between the cam and crank gears. Short of deadheading the hydraulic pump (plumbing it up wrong, or using it without a relief valve) there's nothing you might have done that would cause the cam gear to break. More likely the cam gear was already cracked and now is when it chose to break completely. It's not an unusual failure for SM, SMTA, 400 and 450 engines - especially when the hydraulics have been heavily used. For what it's worth I've had to replace the cam gear on my Super M (cam nut came off and then gear flopped around and destroyed itself). A friend with a 400 has had to replace his twice the past couple of years. Punch below for a few pix from when I replaced mine.
