I rebuilt the motor in my smta and I started it and it ran for 2 minutes, then surged twice and then stalled with a clunk soung at the end. I broke the cam pully right off the cam shaft. The only reason I can thidk of is that I changed my hydraulic hoses and when I put the oil in I didn't let the air out, the vint on the filler cap was plugged because 12 hours later I took the cap off and air can out under pressure.I guy said that maybe the gear was cracked. One guy said that there should be play between the cam and the crank gear. Help

I disagree, there must be some backlash / freeplay between the gears. Don't know what it is in thousandth's for an M and IT manual probably doesn't tell you that either. You should be able to feel some slight wiggle there.

Indeed - a good engine gearset should have a few thousandth's angular backlash between the gears (like 0.005 - .010? measured at the gear OD). However when mine broke, after removing the live pump and reaching inside I found a good 1/2 inch of slop at the cam gear - leaving no doubt the cam gear had failed....

Kevin - There should be no discernable play between the cam and crank gears.

Short of deadheading the hydraulic pump (plumbing it up wrong, or using it without a relief valve) there's nothing you might have done that would cause the cam gear to break. More likely the cam gear was already cracked and now is when it chose to break completely. It's not an unusual failure for SM, SMTA, 400 and 450 engines - especially when the hydraulics have been heavily used.

For what it's worth I've had to replace the cam gear on my Super M (cam nut came off and then gear flopped around and destroyed itself). A friend with a 400 has had to replace his twice the past couple of years.

Punch below for a few pix from when I replaced mine.

Cam & gear are prone to failure if you keep reusing old parts, the new cam gear has a solid hub web, no holes, new camshaft has left hand threads also, these were a running change by IH in 450 series.
