I am having the same problem on my 454 gas. Have you rebuilt the carburator? If you've got the same problem as I did their's a good chance their is a piece of dirt stuck in there somewhere. As long as the fuel pump is giving you enuf fuel to keep the fuel bowl full it is doing it's job. Too much pressure will cause you to push past the needle valve and flood the carb. From what I've learned about these carbs it's the air pulling thru them that sucks the fuel up into the intake, so if something is clogged when you open it up to too much air it isn't getting enuf fuel for the mix.
