IH 454 Gas - Carb, Choke, and Fuel pump problem?

Completed a tune-up on a IH 454 gas tractor..
Replaced points, condenser, plugs, rotor, distr,
and plug wires. Also replaced leaking intake/exhaust manifold gasket. Tractor now hits on all 4 cyl. and IDLES great.

Here's the problem now.. The engine will NOT run
at increased throttle or under any load, with the choke FULLY open. Unless the choke is about half-closed, the engine will die unless you reduce the throttle back to idle. My limited knowledge tells me that the carb is not getting enough gas/pressure from
the fuel pump when the throttle is increased.
There is a small gas leak in the fuel pump, and
I have ordered a new/rebuilt one. Not sure if this
will fix this problem, however. Any other ideas ? or things to check are very much welcomed !!!

I am having the same problem on my 454 gas. Have you rebuilt the carburator? If you've got the same problem as I did their's a good chance their is a piece of dirt stuck in there somewhere. As long as the fuel pump is giving you enuf fuel to keep the fuel bowl full it is doing it's job. Too much pressure will cause you to push past the needle valve and flood the carb. From what I've learned about these carbs it's the air pulling thru them that sucks the fuel up into the intake, so if something is clogged when you open it up to too much air it isn't getting enuf fuel for the mix.

Hi, if you have proper fuel flow, then I would try opening the high speead jet about 1/4 turn at a time. Be sure to mark initial setting. If that doesn't help it coud be the float height adjustment.

Good luck

Thanks guys. Well, the fuel pump did not fix the
problem. It appears it's all in the carb.
The tractor will run great wide open, but the choke must be fully closed.. AND runs great at idle with the choke fully open. Shouldn't be that way, but at least I got the fields mowed. haha.
It's just a pain to have to move the choke depending on whether I'm at idle or full speed.
Plus, with the choke closed like that..it HAS TO
BE really burning the gas.

We didn't rebuild the carb, but did take it apart and clean it thourougly. Interesting enough, the
manual says the float highth (measures from
top, not bottom of float) should be 1/4".
At 1/4", you can't blow air thru the valve.?
We opened slightly more..about 3/8. No change.

I guess I could pursue a rebuilt carb, or really
rebuild this one. Don't know if it's worth any
more time or money.?..

re: high speed adjustment.. There is none.
Only an idle screw, and the throttle linkage.
