Have you ever seen the inside of a 50+ year old light switch box that looked normal? Every insect known to man has been in there at least once. To answer your question?, no, there is no obvious sign of the problem other than its 50 year old wiring and its all shot anyway. That is exactly why I asked about the switch... i can't see inside it to see if its shorting out or something. My 69' Mercury 500 50 hp outboard's wiring is in about the same shape but somehow it's never missed a beat. The M's wiring is much easier to work on though so its getting replaced.
