I have the coil/dist/cutout with battery ignition. This tractor has been in the barn for i don't know how long but my father in law says that it was used last sometime in the past 10 years. Just to see what kind of shape it is in I hooked up a new 6 volt battery today and hit the start switch... nothing after a few times... then I tapped the pedal a little harder and it slowly turned over for me. I turned it over a few times and then it lost it. I disconnected the battery and noticed that lightswitch/ammeter box had the burnt wire smell and the case felt a little warm (it was cold today). Any ideas on what I'm looking at here or what my next steps should be? Repair manual is in the mail by the way along with a 12 volt conversion kit w/harness that I hope will solve the problem anyway. Could the switch be bad? If so, can I just wire the new 12 volt lights up to a separate switch and not use it? Let me know what I'm missing here.

The current for the ignition switch comes from the light switch box. You may have a short caused by a bare wire between the switch and the coil. If you didn't have the lights on it probably didn'thurt the light switch. You may want to open the light switch box and look inside. Wasps and mice have been known to build nests in there.

The damage inside the light box will be obvious. Things don't make burning smells and create heat, then look normal upon inspection.

What probably happened is some critter got up in the box and chewed the wires, or they simply decayed over time.

Have you ever seen the inside of a 50+ year old light switch box that looked normal? Every insect known to man has been in there at least once. To answer your question?, no, there is no obvious sign of the problem other than its 50 year old wiring and its all shot anyway. That is exactly why I asked about the switch... i can't see inside it to see if its shorting out or something.

My 69' Mercury 500 50 hp outboard's wiring is in about the same shape but somehow it's never missed a beat. The M's wiring is much easier to work on though so its getting replaced.

Two years ago, I went back to Montana and got my Dad's 49 M and brought it to Washington state. I had sat for 15 years outside, luckily it had a rain cap on the muffler. It started right up after I put gas in and jumped it with the pickup.

I would suggest draining the oil before you start it and check all the fluids. I mowed, rake and baled 40 acres of grass hay with it last year. Hopefully it will get a new coat of paint.
