Bryan, The best way to verify an M or SM is thru Ytracing the serial#'s. You can visually discern whether it is probably a SM or M by looking at the brake housings. SM would have disc brakes which are noticable by the fact that they have cast round housings, where M's had band brakes with stamped sheet metal housings. I say probably because some very late M's did have disc brakes. The super M had a little more HP than the M, but if the M had been overhauled, it could very well have been re-sleeved so that it would have had its HP increased to SM level. Same goes for SM. So unless you dyno the tractor, or buy from someone who would know for sure what sleeves and pistons were in it, you wouldnt know the true HP. Historically, SM's bring more money than M's, but that is no guarantee that you are getting more tractor. As was mentioned below, disc brakes didn't come without problems. Most people I've talked to actually prefer the band brakes that were on the M. Not until later did IH work out the bugs of their disc brakes. There were other more subtle differences, but HP and brakes were the most obvious.
