Could some one tell me the differences between the M and the SM. I know the power differences. How would a nonexpereinced tractor person tell them apart (other than a label if the paint was bad). Any reply will be much appreciated

Thanks Brian

Brian - Advice below is right on. But another quick way to identify a "super" is to look at the last character of date code on the major castings (block, transmission, rear axle, bolster, etc.). It tells you the day/month/year each part was cast, and is usually - though not always - a few weeks earlier than the tractor's actual build date.

If an M is a super the date code should be X or Y corresponding to 1952 and '53. Date code Z (1954) is OK too but it overlaps with the Super MTA (built only in '54). Letters lower than X in the alphabet correspond to earlier, pre-Super years.

All SM had Disk brakes. The very last Ms had same disk brakes as SM. Disk brakes were available for early Ms but they are different fron SM brakes some say they were dealer installed option but they were serviced by IH and are in parts book. Saw 1947 M at auction today with early disks the difference on outside is that cover is solid casting while SM and later type have renovable plug in center of casting.

The super M also has a faster 4th gear which is better suited for raking hay ect.

Bryan, The best way to verify an M or SM is thru Ytracing the serial#'s. You can visually discern whether it is probably a SM or M by looking at the brake housings. SM would have disc brakes which are noticable by the fact that they have cast round housings, where M's had band brakes with stamped sheet metal housings. I say probably because some very late M's did have disc brakes. The super M had a little more HP than the M, but if the M had been overhauled, it could very well have been re-sleeved so that it would have had its HP increased to SM level. Same goes for SM. So unless you dyno the tractor, or buy from someone who would know for sure what sleeves and pistons were in it, you wouldnt know the true HP. Historically, SM's bring more money than M's, but that is no guarantee that you are getting more tractor. As was mentioned below, disc brakes didn't come without problems. Most people I've talked to actually prefer the band brakes that were on the M. Not until later did IH work out the bugs of their disc brakes. There were other more subtle differences, but HP and brakes were the most obvious.

serial number should indicate SM, If has disc brakes should be SM but not sure all of them did. On the right rear of engine is a raised portion indicating size of engine. M would be 248, SM is 264
