I just went through this, and I got a lot of good advice here. I also had a lot of end play in my pinion shafts. My problem was one of my bearings was loose on the shaft, and my bearings were also loose in the housing.

I fixed mine by pulling the PTO assembly, taking off the cap screw and large washer from the axle, removing the four bolts that hold the axle seal and pulling the axles. After pulling the axles I was able to pull the bull gears back and toward the center of the rear end. This allows enough room to pull the bull pinion assemblies without it catching on the bull gear. One of my axles did not want to pull out so I removed the axle housing with it.

My bearings seemed good, so I center-punched the housing and shaft, then lock-tighted them when I put the assembly back together. I also double sealed the shafts and packed grease between the seals, just because it seemed like the thing to do.
