You are right. An up and down swing in temperatures is particularily hard on the weaned calves. Warm windy days interspersed with some sudden sharp drops in temperature are difficult for them. Pneumonia, shipping fever, IBR become problems and you have to watch them close. The herd cows just slow down, frost up, and wait it out in a bluff of trees. I have never seen a cow freeze to death in the calm cold. A storm is a different matter though... Yes -48c (like it was this morning) is unusual even for here. We normally get 3 or 4 spells of -30c to -40c, and then warm spells in between. Can't see it lasting too much longer. Michael
