Paul: I done quite a bit of thinking on what might be the primary reason for your low side noise. I have to believe that since it only occurs when T.A. is engaged the problem is contained within the T.A. Perhaps somone else on the forum can back me up on this. My gut feeling right now is that a needle bearing is going out possibly inside the primary shaft(sun gear). I have never seen the two bearings in the carrier go out, just show some wear. Is the throwout bearing bad can you tell? The only other answer would be the ramp cams have become soo worn that they are grinding against the carrier when engaged. I have seen the needles seize inside the planetary gears but only rarely, and if you have taken good care of changing the oil and keeping the level up this should not be your problem.

SO- I guess I haven't helped you a whit in narrowwing down the problem without tearing the T.A. apart. Check the Throwout bearing while you have the top plate off although you may not be able to tell easliy if it is going out.

Also- before you split the tractor, try doing what Kelly C did and remove the belt pulley or the plate covering the belt pulley hole in the speed transmission tho get a look at any damage to the gears that may be there(see posts a couple of days ago)_.This may give you some more clues to your noise.
