Doug, Let me clearify here just a minute.. If that leg coming up out of the starter was cherry red....it is going straight to ground somewhere. Make sure it is not touching the case of the starter...there should be an insulating grommet between it and the case. Usually, the fields fail because of long periods of overcranking. That's why they tell you if the thing has not started within 30 seconds, to stop cranking and let it cool for a time. Hope you get it figured out, Allan
