350D Starter/Solenoid Connection Heating up.... no

Recently noticed the 'strap'connection between the solenoid and the starter on my 350D got cherry red when I had to crank her for more that 10-15 seconds..... now she won't turn over (no sounds at all).... what would cause this 'heating problem'? and next what course should I take to figure out whats broke? Any help is appreciated.

Sorry to say, the field windings are cooked. Time for a starter.

did the windings cook because of the heating problem, (ie. did something cause the starter to fail) or are the windings the casue of the heat?

I do not want to cook another starter.

Doug,

Let me clearify here just a minute..

If that leg coming up out of the starter was cherry red....it is going straight to ground somewhere.

Make sure it is not touching the case of the starter...there should be an insulating grommet between it and the case.

Usually, the fields fail because of long periods of overcranking. That's why they tell you if the thing has not started within 30 seconds, to stop cranking and let it cool for a time.

I'd say you have a point of high resistance that make the heat build up. The cause of the High resistance, corrosion, metal fatigue, etc.

I would remove the strap and examine, if it appears to be intact, clean any corrosion off and reinstall it. If you continue to use it in the shape it is in it or something far more expensive will fail.

Probably the best advice is, if it looks at all suspect, replace it.
