When looking at an older IH tractor that is TA equipped it is not uncommon for the "low" side to be out, ei you pull back on the TA lever and the tractor stops just like you clutched it. The older IH tractors for the most part will function fine in the "high" and you will only have 5 forward gears instead of 10. We had a 656 run for over 5 years with TA out before it was finally repaired when we split the tractor to install a clutch. The repairs to a TA are not cheap and can easily run into the thousands (shop) and if done yourself can still be near a thousand. To see if it works on a tractor your looking at to buy the best quick way is to get the tractor under a heavy lug (like starting out in road gear) and pull the lever back QUICKLY (trying to ease it in and out is probably the main reason so many are bad). If the tractor continues moving at reduced speed it is working more or less. If it coast to a stop, its broke or completely out of adjustment (more likely broke). It is extremely important to keep the TA in adjustment, that is probably the second most commmon reason they are broke (see manual for your tractor). The TA was the first version of the "power shift" and is not as important to lite duties, it is needed (or is handy) in heavy field work like plowing.
