Hi All,

I am looking at a couple of IH's where I live and they both have TA listed. From reading past posts, some tractors came with and without TA. Excuse my ignorance on IH's, but was is TA?? My guess is it has something to do with the gears and/or PTO.

Any help is appreciated!
Thanks,
Karl--

A few more comments on TAs. Don't know what model you are looking at but the TA on SMTA and 300, 400 etc were about the same. I repaired mine a year ago when I had tractor split and cost about $200. A complete rebuilt unit is around 500 I believe. Wehn I first got my SMTA the ta was out on the low side. Ran it for a time as just a Super M. Seemed like 1st wasn't slow enough some times. I am glad I repaired the TA as I use it a lot. The SMTA(super M TA were the first IH tractors to have it then was carried foreward into the number series. Very common for TA to be misused and go out, generally on low side. So much so that when you see adds for one of these tractors it generally will indicate good or bad ta.

Karl: TA is the acronym for Torque Amplifier. A tractor so equipped enabled the operator to instantly "gear down" in any of the regular 5 transmission speeds giving the operator 10 forward speeds. This is handy when encountering periodic tough pulling conditions when disking or plowing. In the case of a 460, the gear reduction is about 1.57 to 1. The older TAs (when engaged) allowed the tractor to freewheel when going down a grade. I think the freewheeling characteristic was "corrected" on -06 series tractors of the 1960s. TA's were commonly equipped and were probably standard equipment on most of the larger -00 series tractors issued by IH in the 1950's. Some H's and M's had TA, too. If a letter series tractor is equipped with TA, the tractor's model # says so--MTA, Super MTA, etc.

When looking at an older IH tractor that is TA equipped it is not uncommon for the "low" side to be out, ei you pull back on the TA lever and the tractor stops just like you clutched it. The older IH tractors for the most part will function fine in the "high" and you will only have 5 forward gears instead of 10. We had a 656 run for over 5 years with TA out before it was finally repaired when we split the tractor to install a clutch. The repairs to a TA are not cheap and can easily run into the thousands (shop) and if done yourself can still be near a thousand.

To see if it works on a tractor your looking at to buy the best quick way is to get the tractor under a heavy lug (like starting out in road gear) and pull the lever back QUICKLY (trying to ease it in and out is probably the main reason so many are bad). If the tractor continues moving at reduced speed it is working more or less. If it coast to a stop, its broke or completely out of adjustment (more likely broke). It is extremely important to keep the TA in adjustment, that is probably the second most commmon reason they are broke (see manual for your tractor). The TA was the first version of the "power shift" and is not as important to lite duties, it is needed (or is handy) in heavy field work like plowing.

Before you dismantle anything, check the tranny juice. I replaced mine with 80/90 (14 gals@ $$)
and the TA didn't work properly. Rinsed it out with diesel real well, and put in HY-TRAN and it worked perfectly.
good luck
