There are at least three different styles of check valve for the F-12/F-14 fuel pump. Probably the easiest thing to do is to blow through the pump after you have it done (and sediment bowl back in place). You should be able to blow thru the pump if you put your mouth (or pressure nozzle) on the inlet port. You should NOT be able to blow thru the pump if you put air on the pump outlet. Or just do some thinkin'. The fuel flow must push the check valve off its seat against spring resistance. So the spring goes on the 'low pressure' side of the system.
