Kevin - I saw something like that too when I dropped the tranmission oil in my '47 Minneapolis-Moline U this spring. The stuff that came out was just as you describe - pitch black but with almost no smell. I believe it was the original factory fill as the drain and fill plugs appear to never have seen a wrench. My suspicion is at that over 56 years the lube oxidized, broke down or whatever and turned dark. 85W-90 or similar gear lube will work fine in your A's final drives...
