Mystery Stuff in final drive........

Today I changed the oil in my Super A, and greased all the fittings, checked gear levels, etc. I have a little story, and a coulple of questions. First, the final drives. The left was as I expected, very low, I saw where oil was leaking some around the seals, so no big surprise. On the left one, the level was ok, but I'm not sure what was in there. It was black, and didn't smell like gear oil, really not much smell at all. Do any of you think some rocket scientist put burned motor oil in the there? That is what it looks like, but doesn't smell like it, maybe it's been in there for a long time. Correct me if I'm wrong, shouldn't 80-90 be in the final drives? Do you think I should go get a gasket, and take the covers off and get this stuff out and start over with all fresh oil? Second somewhat unrelated question, what type of oil should I be putting in the hydraulic pump?

As Always thanks for all the help,

Kevin

Kevin - I saw something like that too when I dropped the tranmission oil in my '47 Minneapolis-Moline U this spring. The stuff that came out was just as you describe - pitch black but with almost no smell. I believe it was the original factory fill as the drain and fill plugs appear to never have seen a wrench. My suspicion is at that over 56 years the lube oxidized, broke down or whatever and turned dark.

85W-90 or similar gear lube will work fine in your A's final drives...

Hey Sod - You might post that over on the MM board. Also search on EBay for "minneapolis moline" to get a handle on U values.

BTW the MM U-series are good old tractors in their own right. Not a Farmall of course, but still pretty good. The more I work on and use mine, the more I like it! Punch below for a few pix...
