If you start with a good new or rebuilt starter, there are a few things I can think of that might ruin one that you can look for. If it's a hard starter and you grind on it for long periods of time which overheats the starter motor. If you have too small gauge cables to it so the starter is run undervoltage constantly. Poor alignment of the starter that causes the drive gear to bind. Bad ring gear that causes the starter gear to bind. The first two should be easy to detect and correct, the last two would take closer examination, but should be correctable.
