Question: M breather tube in head?!?

I just finished a Rebuild on a "M" that I picked up with a cracked Head. I replaced the head with a SMTA 8060, cleaned up the FireCraters, Put in new rings, Bearings, etc.
Had my Dad help me and we did it on fathers day weekend, I really enjoyed the time spent with the old man...
Any Who: On the head is about a .300" tube that screws into one side of the head, and runs to the other side and screws in. The tube comes straight up and travels above the rocker arm assembly, then goes back down. It also has a small hole in the top of the tube. It has a 1/4" NPT adapter going into the head that accepts the compression fitting from the tube... What is the function of this tube?
It looks to be associated with the breather that goes back to the oil bath air cleaner... I assumed it vents the positive crank case fumes. I couldn't find it in the manual anwhere.
Needless to say I am having a fun time finding a 1/4" NPT to compression fitting adapter, and was way to impatient to start the tractor...
So I started it without the tube installed. Now the skim of oil I am seeing in the coolant could be left over from the cracked head, but it may have something to do with this elusive tube that has successfully hidden it's function from me:)
