Question: M breather tube in head?!?

I just finished a Rebuild on a "M" that I picked up with a cracked Head. I replaced the head with a SMTA 8060, cleaned up the FireCraters, Put in new rings, Bearings, etc. Had my Dad help me and we did it on fathers day weekend, I really enjoyed the time spent with the old man...
Any Who: On the head is about a .300" tube that screws into one side of the head, and runs to the other side and screws in. The tube comes straight up and travels above the rocker arm assembly, then goes back down. It also has a small hole in the top of the tube. It has a 1/4" NPT adapter going into the head that accepts the compression fitting from the tube... What is the function of this tube?
It looks to be associated with the breather that goes back to the oil bath air cleaner... I assumed it vents the positive crank case fumes. I couldn't find it in the manual anwhere.
Needless to say I am having a fun time finding a 1/4" NPT to compression fitting adapter, and was way to impatient to start the tractor...
So I started it without the tube installed.

Now the skim of oil I am seeing in the coolant could be left over from the cracked head, but it may have something to do with this elusive tube that has successfully hidden it's function from me:)
Sorry for the long post, But what does this tube DO?

Thanks, Daniel

I don't think any of what you're talking about is deathly important. When I replaced my M head with a 400 head I think I just screwed a short piece of small pipe into the hole and left it sticking out in the open to vent under the valve cover, which is vented in a similar fashion. That's all been too many late nights ago though, I'll look tomorrow and post anything different. That motor is slowly going back together again now.

You are right...it is a crankcase vent system. It connects to the tube that goes to the air cleaner on the back of the head and on the front it is connected to the tube that finds its way to the govenor housing. The hole in the tube that is above the rockers is supposed to be there.

Have fun with your tractor! Bob

Uh oh...When I rebuilt the heads 3 years ago I found the tube you are discussing and my mechanic (MR. never-in-doubt) said it was not supposed to be there and soldered the hole closed. I am in the process of some more work on the tractor should I be concerned? Should I open the hole up again? There does not seem to be any damage (yet). Thanks

SuperHank, I only know enough about it to be dangerous. No expert here, that's for sure. I can't see that the small hole in that pipe would make much difference but if the valve cover is off anyway it would be a good time to remove the tube and open the hole up again.
