If you are serious about restoring your H, the first thing you need to do is get the proper manuals for your tractor. At a minimum you need to get the Parts Manual, Operator's Manual, and Service Manual for your tractor. I purchased mine through Binder Books and have never regretted it.

Between the books and information on this site you should have no problem getting your H back in shape, but plan on getting dirty and spending more time and money than you expected.

Here are some tips that may help you.

Before you start, buy a can of PB Blaster and start spraying and tapping bolts and nuts that you will be taking apart later. Even if you're not going to start work for a week or month do this every day or two. When you get to them you will be glad you did. Especially spray your manifold bolts, fan belt set screw, axle clamp bolts, and any other nut or bolt that looks rusty. Spray and tap, spray and tap.

Take pictures as you go. Not only will you have a pictorial record to show what you did, but when you forget where a part goes, or how it fits, you'll have a picture to look at.

Get a cheap note pad and pencil. (They're gonna get greasy) Everytime you remove a part write it down. When you start putting your tractor back together use the list in reverse order to put your parts back on. This should keep you from spending an hour of putting parts on, only to have to remove them again in order to put on another part that should have been put on first.

Be sure to check your bearings as you go. If they're worn replace them while you've got the tractor opened up. A loose ball bearing can and has caused a lot of damage to gears and cases.

Don't reuse seals or gaskets. They're fairly cheap and easy to replace. Also buy a bunch of grease zerts. These things are cheap and if you'll look closely at the ones on your tractor I can almost guarantee that you will see that the little ball bearing is missing from the tip. This little thing keeps dirt and water out and greese in. If you'll look at some of the nice shiny (restored?) tractors at some of the tractor shows you'll see that the zerts are missing the little ball bearings, but they do look good because they're shiny and red.

As far as brakes go, I took my bands to Napa and they relined both brakes for $75.00. The lining ran $10.00 a foot and each shoe takes two feet of lining.

There are a couple of good articles on this site that deal with the bushings in the front-end that causes the tractor to wobble. Just search the articles on this site and just about any problem with an H will be addressed there.
