Is the breather plugged? If any of the pipes going from the governor housing to the head, through the head, and from the head to the air cleaner are plugged you could have problems. If the crankcase can't vent, it will build pressure and force oil out of gaskets and seals, and possibly through the valve guides, maybe past the rings more easily too. Just something else to check before going into major work.
