Thanks for the input.

It was run during nice warm weather. My dh is the mechanic and he's been the mechanic for years. He doesn't do much on the new equipment b/c of the higher tech. He'd have to answer the specific questions on what parts are bad and why. I know we decided if it has to split everything that is worn might as well be done. We got a price from a machine shop for I believe cam and bearing work. That was around $600.00 a couple of years ago. It has been in the back shop since then. It is torn down to the point of splitting. He has also talked to a couple of people who have had the H and love em and know them inside and out.

When we got that tractor it filled the bill for what we needed. It doesn't now. We have grown and I keep adding more critters along with our five horses. We always need a FEL. The wheelbarrow is getting old! It is expensive to rent equipment, too. This year we need a LOT of fencing so I keep saying we need a tractor before a truck. I also am tired of borrowing a tractor to haul firewood. It's bad enough getting it cut.

As far as the DuPont overhaul, it was more that that. It was the conversation, the way the guy's shop was kept and this guy had built a blade for the H and it was some of the neatest welding I have ever seen. My dh and I agreed that anyone we knew, him included, that takes that much care in welding is usually meticulous in thier mechanic work. I guess that doesn't apply when someone wants to make a quick buck. I also am old enough so I still remeber when you could take most people for thier word, if you could have seen this inside of this engine, even I knew the guy had flat out lied. I can't do that and I guess I don't like admitting I fell for someone who did.
Nevertheless, the point being, we need a tractor, it is going to be about a grand (plus) for parts to get this thing going and it is fgrustrating b/c a grand could go towards a newer one. To say nothing of the time which also needs to go in a bunch of other directions. This is just trying to look at all the possibilities and possibly cut the losses as best as can be. It may very well be that we fix it and sell it for what we can.

Actually, I am checking out many different tractors, including, (dare I say it here?) a Kioti. There is NOTHING cut and dried about shopping for a compact unit. Everyone has an opinion and it isn't like Consumer REports ranks them like a car.

Sometimes I feel like Murphy works in real close association with me!!!

Today's Featured Article - Choosin, Mounting and Using a Bush Hog Type Mower - by Francis Robinson. Looking around at my new neighbors, most of whom are city raised and have recently acquired their first mini-farms of five to fifteen acres and also from reading questions ask at various discussion sites on the web it is frighteningly apparent that a great many guys (and a few gals) are learning by trial and error and mostly error how to use a very dangerous piece of farm equipment. It is also very apparent that these folks are getting a lot of very poor and often very dangerous advice fro ... [Read Article]
