Beginner on M's

My brother and I just bought an old M. We are trying to learn a bit about the tractor and have ordered manuals that haven't come in yet. In the mean time, thought I'd post some questions and see if I could learn more. I find these boards very interesting and informative. Thanks to all in advance..

First, the tractor has a single hydraulic cylender on the left had side right beside the left foot rest. It appears to raise and lower implements that would be mounted directly under the motor and trans. So it appears to have hydraulics. At least that is my conlusion at this point. Haven't a clue as to where the controls to this cylinder are. The only probable controls I've noticed are two levers that are presently tied back with baling wire just forward of the right foot rest. Are these the control levers for the hydrualics?

Now we are considering purchasing the 3 point hitch from saginaw shown on the following page

http://www.saginawcountytractor.com/

This looks like a really good hitch, but I'm concerned that we will have to add an additional hydraulic pump? Any information that could be passed on here would be most appreciated.

Secondly, I've only driven the tractor a few yards cause the radiator has a hole in it and the seat wobbles so bad, I'm a bit afraid it will dump me. What little bit I drove it, I noticed the brakes are shot. Is it a big project to overhaul the brakes on this tractor. Again any info or reference will be most appreciated.

I will be pulling the radiator next week to get it repaired and then we will begin the restoration in earnest.

Any suggestions on stabilizing this seat would be appreciated. I'm well over 250lbs and that seat seems strained when I'm on it. I know it would not be good to lose control over this machine, so a good seat is going to be very important.

Thanks in advance for any responses.

Nick Williams

Today's Featured Article - Box Plow Blues - by Tom Schwarz. One of the first implements most tractor owners obtain is the box plow. For very little money, this piece of equipment promises to plow and flatten any hill or vale on your ranch road or farm. At least that's what I thought! As simple as a box plow appears, it can be rather challenging to make work correctly. In our sandy soils of Florida, traction is king. You can never have wide enough tires or heavy enough weights to get all the traction you want … unless you own a monster tractor. U ... [Read Article]
