I agree with Phil - it sounds like carb problems. In addition to his suggestion, recommend you remove, thoroughly clean and reinstall the sediment bowl and screen. Now remove the pipe plug at the bottom of the carburetor bowl, then open the shutoff valve beneath the tank and let a cup or so of fresh gas flush thru the carb. I've had difficuties similar to what you describe - problem turned out to be a slug of rusty water lurking in the bottom of the carb float bowl. Flushing the carb bowl will get rid of it. While you are at it, recommend also removing the distributor cap, then clean or replace the points, rotor and condenser. Make sure the point gap is properly set (0.020), and that the inside of the distributor is free of cracks and scrupulously clean. Incidentally I too own a '53 Stage II Super M - can fully appreciate why it "is your life"!!!
