Ever See A Injector Tube Blow Out Into the Water Jacket ????

I bought a 1566 IH at an auction a few weeks ago, and the engine was disassembled. It has a DT-436 IH Diesel engine. I talked to the mechanics and they said that the operator overheated it and cracked the head.

It was taking water in the pan when it was parked and blowing it out the exhaust when running. So, naturally they thought a blown head gasket or most likely a cracked head.

But to my amazement, I cleaned the head and found no cracks. Even had it magnafluxed, but no cracks. No warpage either so I didn't have to get it shaved again. Then I gave it the really good lookover and found the injector tube that is pressed in the head of #2 cylinder to have a big hole blown out the side into the water jacket.

The injector itself had a melted injector nut in one corner where the brass seal contacts the seat. So, I now have a new set of injectors coming just in case.

But I can't figure what would of blown the tube? Maybe there was some foreign matter on the seat during the last rebuild (About 200 hours before) or a bad gasket on the injector?

The other 5 injectors are fine, and show no sign of damage to them or the seats/tubes. And the engine didn't overheat as much as the mechanics were led to believe. I guess I got relly lucky on this one.

But what would of blown out the side of the injector tube ???? Any Ideas ????? Just so it won't happen again.
