Alot of good information in all the posts here. Allow me to through in my thoughts. I currently am using a ford 9n, and I beat the heck out of it. Bought it for 1800 with a brush hog and then put about $250.00 in it for carb rebuild, fluid changes, battery, tune-up stuff and two coils (forgot to trun off the key). Since then, this machine has started 1st time every time and has worked hard, very hard. The only problem I have is the postion of the brake pedels and power, the little 9N just does not have much.
So, like you I am in the market for a tractor, currently looking at an H, Allis WD and a WD 45. All but the 45 have narrow front ends and the WD's do need alot of work compared to the H. I am leaning more towards the H, although it does not have the power that the WD's have, it has more power than the 9N. I can get a wide front pretty easly for it and I think this machine will do everything I need it to do.
Now, I do not think these old machine are well equiped to run a front end loader. For that I would consider a more modern tractor. For everything else; well you first need to decide what you are going to do with the property.
I suggest that you look at alot of machines, drive them and spend some time doing research. just by reading throught the archieves on this site you can get a feel for how each tractor performs, its capabilites and short comings. You can also get an idea what type of problems each machine has. That is what I did and that is why I am leaning more toward the Farmall--low upfront cost, easy to work on, parts readily available and low cost, and the most important factor in this descition was that my CFO(wife) likes the looks of the Farmall over the Allis!

Today's Featured Article - The Rescue of a Fordson F - by Anthony West. Introduction I live in the UK and have for many years restored Fordson tractors (in the main model N's). I have also restored and shown model F's, E 27N's, Field Marshall Series 2, David Brown Cropmasters and the old rey Fergeson T 20. At one time I had seven restored examples which were shown and used in ploughing matches. As most restorers, I have a number of war stories I can relate on a range of topics that may help other like minded and interested people. Perhaps my first p ... [Read Article]
