A Word About tractors, people and knowledge...throw in a little wisdom too

Posted by tom on May 15, 2002 at 16:21:54 from (206.243.130.235):

I'm 42. Born in 1959, 18 years after my Farmall A made it to a field in New York state for 18 years, working for a now unknown person who bought it brand new in 41. In 1959, the first time buyer sold it to a young man who used it for his garden, and his house to plow snow in the winter. For the past 43 years this young man used this tractor, took care of it, made 43 annual gardens and plowed 43 years worth of winter snow. Then it exchanged hands again, and landed in New Hampshire after a face lift and minor repairs and rubber replacement.

Yeah sure, I could have paid less for it, and I could have bought one closer to home to save 600.00 in shipping fees...but I didn't. I'm the third owner of this Farmall A.

A young man, 17 years old acquired the tractor did the necessary work, put his best into it, advertised it on this site, made some money and now it's in my shed for the next leg of it's mechanical life. Good for him!

And here I sit, at a terminal. in 2002, 61 years a Farmall A left the assembly line and in a sense, this old tractor is still fresh and new; ready to go to work, ready for the next job.

And being new to Farmall's, and being new to tractors in general, I ask a few questions, and a fella named Gene B decides to help, I send a part to Iowa from New Hampshire, and next thing I know, through this old tractor, I have reaffirmed my faith in good old basic values, good people, and knowledge to share. People willing to help people..that's a good thing.

And I'm a stranger, Gene's a stranger, but through some unknown willingness to help, I am better off for it. Through his good work and sincerity, I have made a friend through a 61 year old piece of machinery. And to Kim and this site, none of this would have happened. Thanks to Kim, Gene B, and this old Farmall A for enriching my life and giving me an opportunity to learn and appreciate the good and simple things, that when it's all said and done come down to two basic concepts...good people, and taking care of the land. tom
