When you are driving the tractor the grease is thrown up into the trough by the gears in the transmission. My H has these troughs too, several of them that lead to the bearings in the transmission and rearend. Some tractors (like A, B, C) have a specific gear that does nothing more than sling oil around in the transmission. Steven
