Hugh - The best spot to measure system voltage is at the battery. Connect your voltmeter directly to the + and - battery posts if you can get at the battery easily, or to the "hot" side of the starter switch and a good ground otherwise. Don't take readings at the alternator - they can be misleading if you don't fully understand how it works. If the battery is fully charged you should read somewhere between 12.2 and 12.6 volts with the motor stopped, and between 14.0 and 15.0 with the motor running. If it shows greater than 15 volts there's a problem with the regulator. If the ammeter shows a high level of charge (20 amps or more) it could mean one of two things: 1 - The battery is simply partially discharged. As the battery approaches full charge the ammeter reading will taper down to 3 or 4 amps or so. This could take an hour or two of running depending on the battery condition. 2 - The battery is no longer accepting a charge and is about to fail.
